[Scorpion 13] Moving up to Move On

A Month Later....

Captain Kaile Emmerson
Commanding Officer
USS Scorpion

Kaile left the admiral's office wearing the new pip against her neck.  She was officially a commanding officer. Though she didn't think she was ready, she knew for sure if she didn't take this job, they would stop repairs on the Scorpion, decommission it and disband the crew. It'd taken years for the crew they had then to trust each other, depend on each other and love each other.  She wasn't about to let them split the whole crew up.

Taking a breath, she lifted her chin and walked through the base. She was going to find a quiet place, sit down maybe get some reading done and maybe even head back down to Spain to see if she could get some shopping done.  But the fates had a different plan.  Her comm badge chimed and she moaned.

=/\=Yes?=/\=
=/\=We'd like to see you on board the Scorpion commander. I believe we are finished.=/\=
=/\=On my way.=/\=

Kaile stopped in her temporary quarters for a moment to freshen up and change her uniform before making her way to the Scorpion.  When she stepped abroad, it felt diferently. She wasn't sure what it was but she kind of liked it.  A few ensigns turned to look at her and she could see shock written all over their faces.  Nodding to one then another, she made her way along the corridor until she reached the bridge.

"I guess congratulations are in order," Samira Dex grinned at her. "If anyone was going to be Captain after Aaron I am glad it was you."

"Well, I wish I shared your confidence, Samira," Kaile sat in the XO's chair and crossed her leg.

When Samira eyed her quizzically, she frowned and moved to the captian's chair. "Okay, what do you have for me?" Kaile asked.

"Well," Samira handed over the PADD. "We have the breach on decks four and five fixed. Everything is ready. We're working on the warp core right now. We just cant seem to get it up to an output of four thousand teradynes per second."

"Where are you now?"

"Three thousand two."

Kaile nodded. "Not bad. You'll get it up soon."

Samira grinned. "We're hoping once we get the horizontal conduits back in place it'll be where we want. "

"ALright sounds good. What about the disruption to the sheilds?"

"Those were worked on first. We have the sheilds up to ninety five percent. A few more tweeks and we'll be fully operational."

Kaile scanned the padd with all the other repairs that was made, the new additions and smiled. She was very happy with where the repairs were. "Well, I guess I can tell the brass we'll be ready in about two weeks." Kaile said, scanning her padd. "I should inform the crew. Good job. Remind me to have a party for your team. You've done great work with this."

Once again Samira grinned. The Trill had some an amazing personality. Kaile laughed and stood. She walked around the bridge looking at the difference in it.  Taking a breath she smiled and turned to Samira. "Informed the crew they are to start returning within a week. We'll need all the department heads here sooner to make sure their departments are up and running without a hitch."

"Aye Captain."

Kaile winced then.

"You know--you're going to have to start getting used to that word," Samira said softly.

"Kaile nodded. "I know..."

"I'll keep working. I'll carry out your orders and see you soon?"

Kaile nodded again.

"And er...Captian? Get some sleep. You have to wait until after the second mission before you get all burn ouy and wrinkled."

Kaile chuckled. "I can't yet. I need to go down and check on the status of Captain Golding's trial.  Then I'll try getting some sleep."

Samira nodded and exited the bridge leaving Kaile alone. She rested her hands on her hips and looked around.  It was so strange calling it her bridge.

[Scorpion 14] Dr. Moreau effect

Dante hadn't talked to Emmerson yet and wondered what the hell was going on with things and he finally found quarters though small and cramped (especially for a Starbase) and placed his animals about and hopefully most of them would stay in their nice stasis units and he went to the replicator and ordered or tried to order some food the replicator didn't work

He left his quarters and went to the local diner and started to eat a Altair Sandwhich after he finished that he started to chow down on another bit of dinner...

[Scorpion 12] Sending Minds on a Holiday

Tasha Billings
Civilian Morale Officer
USS Scorpion

Ensign Seungo Joon-Li

Security Officer
USS Scorpion

Ensign Thorix
ACMO
USS Scorpion

Tasha looked at her watch again and frowned. It wasn't like Thorix to be late. She flopped onto the wall of a fountain near where they were supposed to meet because she just couldn't seem to stand anymore.  She would wait five more minutes then she was going home. She would rather be in the sunlight of Jamaica than standing on a starbase when she didn't have to anyday.

Thorix snuck beside Tasha and sat down. "Sorry I'm late. We were having lunch with the Commander. That was until Seungo's new boss showed up."

Tasha arched a brow and glanced over at Seungo who looked like he'd seen a ghost. "You alright?"

Seungo shook his head. He wasn't even over K'Rish yet and already they replaced him...with another version of him.  He blinked at Tasha, tilting his head slightly and opened his mouth to speak but the words just didn't want to com out.  Taking a breath he turnbed away and raked his fingers through his hair.

"Thor? What's wrong with him?" Tasha questioned.

"The new CSO," Thorix whispered to Tasha. "Is a Klingon."

Tasha's eyes widened. "Oh!" she said. "Go--" she reached out and touched Seungo's shoulder. "Just remember this new guy isn't K'Rish. Just keep that in the back of your mind and it shouldn't be hard to move on."

He turned and looked at her then. "I suddenly don't feel much like company. I'm going to the Scorpion to see if I can start recaliberating security settings. I will talk to you guys later."

Thorix watched Seungo leave and wondered what it would be like to love someone as much as the Ensign seemed to have loved this tough headed pain in the ass--er--Klingon. Though their relationship was a tad unorthodox, and highly illogical for reproduction, it was real. Turning, he looked at Tasha who was still looking after the Korean male.

"Should we go after him?" Thorix asked.

Tasha shook her head. "No. Sometimes, people need to fight their own battles; especially when they're fighting demons. Do you still feel like shopping?"

Thorix shrugged. "We should do something to take our minds off these horrid situations.  Sitting around here feeling sorry for it all will not make things better. For the next little while, everything is right with the galaxy."

"Thor! Are you starting to ride along this positivity train?" Tasha laughed.

"Don't rile me woman," Thorix said trying desperately to sound serious.

Tasha simple laughed harder. She doubled over with her mirth. "Oh I'm sorry!" she laughed again. "But it's hilarious having a vulcan say those words..."

Thorix laughed and walked off towards the stores on Starbase Omega, "come on." He called over his shoulder.

Tasha chuckled and jogged to catch up. She wrapped an arm around his shoulder. "Well my friend, now we are in my element."

Thorix moaned. "Oh brother."

[Scorpion 11] Animal Man

Commander Dante Evaristo
First Officer
USS Scorpion

and

Tasha Billings
Civilian Morale Officer
USS Scorpion

Dante arrived aboard carrying a lot of bags he despised the fact that he couldn't transport this stuff to his quarters and instead had to carry it himself he looked at the woman before him just as he fell over hopefully not smashing the bags he carried. "Excuse me" he asked her. "Can you help me?"

Tasha muttered on her breath wondering where Thorix was. The two were supposed to try and get some shopping done—making the most of shore leave and all that stuff. Taking a breath she was almost scared out of her skin when someone spoke behind her.  Spinning around she arched a brow at the man struggling with the bags. She moved quickly to catch a flying knapsack and placed it on the ground. “Erm…Yeah. Where are you going?”

"To the Nova-class Vessel docked nearby. I am the new First Officer Commander Dante Evaristo." He stood despite all that he was carrying and said to her "I am glad you caught that bag. It has a rare animal inside in stasis. Can you help me carry this stuff to my quarters miss?”

She arched a brow at him. “Erm…we cannot board yet. The vessel has been heavily damaged on its last go around. They are storing all the bags in one place then beam them on board once everything is ready. I could have them beamed there if you’d like.”

"Well that bad for my pets that I am bringing aboard beaming them will disturb them in ways you would not want to know of. " He said to her "Do you have any other suggestions?"

“Did you clear bringing animals on board with the captain?” Tasha asked. “Wait…we don’t have a captain right now. But what kind of animals are there? I’m not really a fan of animals.”

"I hope they will be they are small animals ones that are in need of protection I am looking for the best place for them I assure you that things will be okay. Why don't you like animals?"

“It’s a long story,” Tasha said, looking around.  “I’m Tasha Billings. Chief Morale officer for the Scorpion…You’re going to hear stories…”

"Then who better to tell me said stories than you!" Dante said with a smile. "I guess I need to find quarters aboard the station have any recommendations?" He asked her simply.

“I don’t know. I am not staying on the base.” Tasha glanced around again before looking at him. “I am here to meet someone for a shopping date but I can’t seem to find him. But I will suggest you having these bags beamed to the Scorpion’s storage area—sans your animals and find Commander Emmerson. She’ll be able to tell you what’s happening.

"Thank you." He smiled toward her and then picked up his bags then nodded to her "Welcome aboard. I am glad we are serving together." And with that he bid her adieu.

“You’re welcome…now. I best be finding that Vulcan before he gets himself into trouble,” she grinned. “I will see you around…commander.”

[Scorpion 10] A Captain's Confession

Commander Kaile Emmerson
Executive Officer
USS Scorpion
and
Captain. Aaron Golding
Commanding Officer
USS Scorpion
She leveled her eyes on the man, now sitting on the ground with his back against the wall and legs stretched out before him.  When she’d met Aaron Golding, she had such a giant crush on him.  Though his hair tinged with grey, he had bright eyes. They were the eyes that had seem so many things of the galaxy but still wanted, no yearned to see more. There was a strength in his body, the way he walked, the upright way in which he would lock eyes with you when you spoke with him. The corners of his eyes crinkled when he laughed, when his lips tugged upward in a smirk. But the man sitting on the ground was a shadow, a fragment of that very handsome, very sane man.
“Captain,” she called.
He didn’t look up at her. He simply sat there, head down, eyes closed. He was so still, for a moment Kaile thought he was sleeping.
“Captain Golding?”
“Still, Kaile?” his voice was rough—so much so, it cracked on her name. “After all that’s happened, after all I’ve done, you still call me captain?”
She bit her lower lip. “Until they take your pips, you are my Captain.”
He lifted his head then. When their eyes met, Kaile felt her heart broke.
“I always tried, Kaile…I desperately tried to be the man that deserved you,” he whispered.
“Captain you…”
“No..let me finish. I saw the way you looked at me. I knew it—I was old enough to figure it out. At first I simply thought it was a crush so I let it go. But as you moved from Lt to Ensign on board my vessel I just—you were strong, daring, intelligent. I had to fight, daily to keep my hands to myself and to hide my feelings from you.”
“Why…why hide them?”
“You know the rule…I was your captain.”
Silence reigned between them filling the empty spaces between unspoken words and broken hearts. It pulsated through the force field at Aaron for he shifted and eased backward even harder to the wall.
“I was a fool,” he finally spoke, breaking the torturous quiet wrapped around them. “I betrayed my heart and left my hatred for one person break me. You are the Scorpion’s next Captain Kaile and you will be an even better commanding officer than I was.”
“I don’t see how that is possible.”  She hung her head.
Aaron moved them, closer to the force field and eyed her. “Look at me…”
She looked up.
“I know they asked you to take command,” Aaron explained. “I am not that far gone. I know you so I know why you are here. You don’t need my permission.  Because I was an idiot and screwed up, doesn’t mean your life ends. Because I wanted you so desperately that I messed up any chance we may have…let this all go, Kaile…I only ask that from time to time you think of me as I used to be…not like this.”
Kaile eased from her seat and smiled at him. “I promise…”
“Go,” Aaron said, moving back to his spot against the wall. “And tell Seungo that I am truly, truly sorry…I know it won’t mean much but please…tell him?”
Kaile stepped closer. “I will…good-bye, Captain.”
“Aaron.”
Her cheeks heated but she kept her eyes locked with his. “Aaron.”
He smiled then, closed his eyes and rested his head back against the wall.

[Scorpion 9] Banana Pancakes

Lt. Kani Oloonu
Chief Medical Officer

USS Scorpion
<Maui, Earth>

The morning found Kani jogging along the water, through some woods and up a lone slope.  He jogged slower than normal for his mind just wasn't into it. When he finally made it to the top, his lungs and muscles burned from exertion but he was looking forward to that. He loved the feel of a good workout.  At the top of the hill, he stood, hands on hips staring down at the blue of the water below him. To his right was the green of the land and to his left, the buildings of the city.

He never realised it but slowly more and more buildings were developed.  When the government had mandated that no more woods be cut down, he could have cheered. Smiling and inhaling deeply. When he was locked on board a starship with only a holodeck to remember his home by, the air was never this fresh.  He really didn't want to leave the top yet--he just wanted to stand there and stare out over the water.  But he'd like to be back and make Shane some banana pancakes.

Smiling, he took one final look around and turned back down the hell, pumping his arms and pushing himself.  Though he felt lazy and wanted to stop, he tried double hard and by the time he emerged behind his sister's large house, he didn't feel any guilt about holding back. Sweat flowed down his back, over his face from his soaked hair.

"Kaio, is that you?" Kelani called from up the steps.

"Ae," he replied. "I went for a run. Is Shane awake?"

"Not yet. Why?"

"I wanted to make him breakfast," Kani confessed. "I am going in for a quick shower."

"Alright."

Kani didn't waste time. He took a quick shower and got dressed in a white pair of shorts and a black hawaiian shirt with red parrots on it.  He then set right to work making his nephew's favorite breakfast item.  It was a good hour before Shane came down the stairs and Kani was ready.

"Morning sleepy head," Kani teased.

"Morning uncle Kaio...what you doin?"

"I made you breakfast," Kani grinned before scooping shane into his arms. "Want some?"

Shane nodded. When he saw the pancakes his face lit up and he hugged Kani's neck tightly. "My favorite!"

"I know...Do you wany syrup or butter?" Kani laughed.

"Syrup please!"

Kani pleaced Shane into a chair and shared him some breakfast. He added a glass of milk before looking up to see Kelani leaning against the door watching them.  "What?" he asked.

"You really should give serious thought to children, Kaio," she took a breath and walked into the room. "Can I have some breakfast too?" she kissed Shane's head.

"You can have some of mine, mom," Shane told her.

Kani laughed and shared some food for himself and his sister before sitting across from her. Kelani was right. But children took time. How can you have children with someone you barely know? Kelanie did it...Shane's father took off the first chance he had.

He sighed and glanced over at his sister then at Shane. They were his world.  Everything was so overly complicated. Suddenly Kani was wishing, life was as easy as making panana pancakes.

[Scorpion 8] Chicken or the Egg

Ensign Thorix
Asst. Medical Officer
USS Scorpion
<<Jamaica, Earth>>

and

Tasha Sloane
Morale Officer

USS Scorpion
<<Jamaica, Earth>>

Thorix lay on his back in the sand beside his best friend Tasha and took a breath. "Can you believe any of this?" The young Vulcan doctor wanted to know. "Who knew our captain would have gone crazy, tried to kill a planet?"

Tasha chuckled. "It's not a laughing matter but what else can you do? If you don't laugh you will definitely cry."

"I am not much of a crier," Thorix replied, turning his head to peer at his friend. She was laying beside him, sunglasses over her eye and a long piece of strawberry twizzler sticking from her mouth. He chuckled. "But I do not know what commander Emmerson is going to do."

Tasha took a breath and bit off a piece of her candy. She had thought about it, and what she was going to do to build crew morale after this whole debacle was over. She didn't even know is she was still a part of the Scorpion's crew.

"We don't even know if we're still a part of the crew," Thorix voiced her thoughts. "This whole thing is a mess."

"That is true...but I'm sure we're still. I mean, if we weren't they would have told us already," Tasha shifted on her towel. She rolled over to her stomach, groaned and rolled back to her back.

The two lay there in silence for a bit longer before Thorix sat up. "I should get out of the sun. Vulcans don't tan. We burn."

Tasha laughed. "I could have told you that. Lets get inside."

Tasha and Thorix gathered their things and ran across the sand, up some steps and into Tasah's summer home.  It was a beautiful place on the small island of Jamaica. One of the only paradises left on the planet.  Thorix loved it there for it was quiet--so quiet--at nights when he lay awake in his insomniac stupor he could hear the ocean waves crashing into the rocks outside his window.

Taking a breath, he dumped his towel to the ground, and followed Tasha into the kitchen. He climbed to a stool while Tasha peered into the fridge and began pulling out food from the night before.

"I will say this though," Thorix lifted the cover from a white bowl and smiled. "It is going to be interesting, whatever happens."

"Yeah...Captain Golding just...I don't know Thor. If a man like that can snap...."

"What does it say of the rest of us?" Thorix finished. Reaching into the bowl he grabbed a handful of grapes and stuffed some into his mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, he relished the taste of the cold fruits before swallowing. "Humans are strange creatures, Tasha...They are capable of amazing acts of kindness."

"And mind-numbing acts of evil--and the scary thing is they can turn from good to bad like that!" she snapped her fingers.

"Do you think people are born good and becomes evil or do you think they are born evil?"

"Is this one of those chicken before the egg riddles?" Tasha made a face.

Thorix shook his head. "No riddle. I'm just asking what you think."

Tasha shrugged while swiping some grapes. "I don't know. I do know that most things come down to freedom to chose. You can chose to do good or chose to do evil."

"So you think they are born good but chose to be evil?"

"For crying out loud, Thor!" Tasha growned. "We're on vacation. Turn that brain off for just a second, would you?"

Thorix shoved more grapes into his mouth and chewed staring at her.

Tasha shook her head and tossed a grape at him. She knew telling a Vulcan to turn off his brain is like asking them not to go through pun far....

[Scorpion 7] A Difficult Decision

Commander Kaile Emmerson
Executive Officer
USS Scorpion (before repairs)
<USS Scorpion, San Francisco>

Kaile hunched over the console before her.  From time to time she would glance up at the time.  The last she heard they were deliberating on the Captain's fate but she knew the end result.  Aaron had caused some major damage. Rubbing her tired eyes, she flopped into her chair on the bridge and crossed her legs. The schematics of what they were doing to the Scorpion was interesting.  They were refitting everything.

"Who do you think our new captain is going to be?" Seungo's voice came from behind her.

Kaile whirled around. "Ensign. This ship has ghosts. Don't sneak up on me like that."

"My apologies."

"As for our new captain--I have no idea," Kaile took a breath and stretched her legs out before recrossing them. "It will be strange having a new captain."

"I know..." Seungo handed her a padd. "It's a final talley of all things Security. I am not sure what to do without K'Rish there and we never did have an asst."

Kaile nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat.  "I should dismiss the rest of the crew for shore leave. I mean who knows when they will be finished."

Seungo nodded. "Does that mean I'm off duty now?" he smirked at her.

"Yes. Take some time, Go. You deserve it," Kaile patted his shoulder.

When he nodded and exited, Kaile walked over to the Operations console and sent a shipwide message to all the crew.

"Attention All Crew," she wrote. "As you may know the vessel, USS Scorpion is under repair and our captain is otherwise, detained. Until further notice you are now on shore leave. Take some time to spend with those you love. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Commander Kaile Emmerson."

After sending the message, she looked around her, grabbed her padd and was on her way out when her comm badge chirped. Taking a breath she shook her head. She did say they could call but dang.

=/\=Admiral Sotah to Commander Emmerson=/\=

Well this is new. Kaile thought.

=/\=Go ahead Admiral=/\=
=/\=Please report to my office on board Starbase Omega. I on the fifteenth floor=/\=

Kaile made a face. =/\=Right away sir.=/\=

When the connection was cut, she stopped and looked at her reflection in a nearby wall.  Her hair was a mess.  Groaning, she stuck the padd between her knees, pulled her hair out from it's tight corn-row and finger combed it. She then re-braided it, wrapped the ends around and tucked them under to make a bun. Tugging her tunic in place. Turning on her heels she made her way from the Scorpion to the base.

The thought of why they were calling her ran through her mind.  Did they think she did something wrong with what Aaron had done? The truth was Kaile felt guilty too. She knew if they wanted to press charges she wouldn't fight--but charges on what? Perhaps some dumb Good Samaritan law...

Ugh! She thought.

Taking the turbo lift up, she exited and glanced down at the padd in her hand. It said she should go left.  With a deep breath, she lifted her chin and made her way to Admiral Sotag's office.  When she was admitted, the admiral sat behind his desk and gazing out the window was a female Commodore. The woman had her hair tied up tightly in the back--her blonde locks had traces of white throughout.  Her body looked strong but Kaile could tell she was older.  Arching a brow, she stood at attention, waiting.

"At ease Commander," Sotag said motioning to a chair. "Please, have a seat."

Saying nothing, she sat down but her back never touched the chair. She sat on the edge of her chair, ankles crossed, padd in lap and waited.

"You may be wondering why we called you here," Sotag began. "And who this is. This, is Commodore Ashley Shain. We had a rather tough decision to make regarding the future of the USS Scorpion. Especially the way her last captain ended."

Kaile tilted her head.

"Whether or not Captain Golding is acquitted or convicted he can no longer command a starfleet vessel. Our alliances would not have it and we are not certain we can trust him."

"Would it not be up to a counselor to declare him fit or unfit?" Kaile questioned.

"That is correct, Commander," Commodore Shain finally spoke.  Her voice was soft, almost like a mother. "But there is no way he could pass a mental evaluation. You know that, don't you?"

Kaile hung her head and pushed a breath out her mouth.

"The reason we called you here commander is to offer you a promotion--to command the USS Scorpion."

Her head snapped up, her eyes must have bulged for the Admiral exchanged a look at Commodore Shain. "Sir..."

Commodore Shian walked to sit beside Kaile. "We understand your hesitation. We understand your loyalty. But Commander you have shown courage in the face of danger. You've had to make decisions that tell us you are ready for this position. We would reather offer you this since your crew is accustomed to you and we did not want to have to make any more changes that was necessary for their healing."

"But Captain Golding..."

"Will have to retired after this," Admiral Sotag said, his irritation evident.

Kaile casted a glared in his direction. She rubbed a hand over her mouth and took a breath. "Can I have some time to think about this?"

The commodore nodded. "Yes, sure. This is a heavy decision. Would twenty four hours be enough?"

Kaile nodded.

"Very well," Commodore Shian said. "Dismissed."

Kaile nodded her head and exited the room.

***********

After the commander let the room, Commodore Shian walked back to the window and stared out.

"Did you really need to baby her, Commodore?" Admiral Sotag questioned, brows knitted.

"No...but she proved once more she is ready for this position," Commodore Shian spoke without looking back. "She has a loyalty to her captain even though she knows he can no longer command, still she will ask his permission."

"How do you know that?" Sotag frowned.

"She's a good woman and even better Starfleet officer, Sotag--she will ask his permission."

[Scorpion 6] Reassignment and promotion?

"What?!" Dante said aloud as he looked at his Captain who had called him into the Captain's Ready Room a few minutes before.

"Sorry Evaristo," His Captain Lia Nelse a Trill who had been Dante's commanding officer for the past 3 years. "That's the way it goes when you do good work you get noticed I put you in for a promotion which you wanted and look what it got you."

Dante shook his head he couldn't believe this was happening, "But Command Ma'am? I thought that I could at least stay as the Chief Engineer rather then go on and become a Command officer...I am not fit for Command.."

"Admiral Belum disagrees Dante. What he sees is a smart capable individual that is able to handle Command and everything associated as such...that means everything you've been doing such as your pranks and things and making fun of Commander Goren is going to come back to haunt you." Nelse said with a grin as she sat back and gauged Dante's reaction.

Dante sighed and looked at her and then nodded, "Well I did want this promotion and though its not what I wanted...I'll go with it ma'am."

"Now that's showing Command abilities!" Nelse said and then told him, "You will have to pack up and move out within two days we'll be meeting with the U.S.S. Soval within that time and they will transport you to your assignment."

"Roger ma'am," Dante said standing then nodding to her and said, "I will inform my asst to take over till my replacement arrives.."

"Actually Dante, your asst is gonna be your replacement." Nelse said.

Dante grinned happily at this news, "Finally some good news for Cartwright."

"He was pretty excited or will be when I tell him or rather...Commander Evaristo when you tell him,"

Dante nodded, "I'll do so Ma'am thank you for letting me know."

"You're welcome Commander now you are dismissed." Nelse said as she watched Dante leave.

**A few hours later in Dante's Quarters**

Dante pulled out his bags and started to pack getting ready for his new adventure...

[Scorpion 5] Reflection Decision

Lt. Lisa Fletcher
Chief Diplomatic Officer
USS Scorpion
<Before Repairs>

Lisa stood by the window of her rented Condo and stared up at the skies. Somewhere, hovering over San Francisco, Captain Aaron Golding was in a world of trouble.  She couldn't understand it. Why would such a grounded man just snap? Taking a breath, she lifted the glass of whiskey to her lips and took a small sip. She hated the taste but she always kept a bottle in her drawer for dire situations. Her captain snapping and killing half a population, a few of his crew and being court marshalled counted as dire.

With another sip, she walked away from the window and flopped into a sofa. She picked up the padd they'd delivered to her regarding where she would be going next. How could they already have made a decision?  The trial wasn't over yet...it had barely begun. What was happening?

Taking a breath, she activated it, put her code in and glared at the information.

Attention: Lt. Lisa Fletcher
We have made a decision regarding your new placement. We took in consideration your length of service on board the USS Scorpion under Captain Aaron Golding. We now give you the choice to be transfered to the USS Cormac or remain on board the USS Scorpion under a new commander. We require your reply in seventy two hours or the decision will be made for you.

Yours truly,
Admiral Nathan Keswick

Lisa rolled her eyes like an insolent teenager.  It wasnt much of a choice. It felt almost like they were forcing her to leave the Scorpion.  Lifting her legs to the coffee table, she read the note once more before tapping the padd lightly against her knee. She didnt want to leave the Scorpion. It was her home. How could they ask her to just pick up and leave when the crew needed her more than ever?

Easing from the seat, she walked over to the communication console in the far side and sat.  she entered the coordinates and waited.  Soon the Starfleet insignia was replaced with Admiral Keswick's face.  His bushy brows were arched as in surprise. But his dim green eyes were what really left an impression on her.

"Admiral. Lt. Fletcher, Lisa, USS Scorpion."

"Ahh Miss, Fletcher. I take it you have recieved or messsage. Have you made a decision."

"Yes sir."

"And?"

"I have elected to remain a part of the Crew of the USS Scorpion. It is my home and I not wish to leave them now."

The admiral nodded. "Duely noted Lt. We have not decided when the Scorpion will be leaving starbase omega as of yet, so enjoy your shore leave."

"I don't see how that is possible sir, but I will try."

The admiral nodded again with a tight smile before her screen returned to the starfleet insignia.

"Good-bye to you too," Lisa muttered, turn in her chair.

[Scorpion 3] Silent Comfort

Ensign Seungo Joon-Li
Security Officer
USS Scorpion

And

Commander Kaile Emmerson
Executive Officer
USS Scorpion
<Before repairs>

Seungo Joon-Li sat on the edge of K'Rish's bed with a picture of himself and K'Rish. He was swinging from the Klingon's back with the goofiest grin on his face. He pulled some air in his nose, pushed it out his mouth but he still couldn't feel much. A single tear slid down his cheeks and he bashed it away with the back of a hand. K'Rish wouldn't want his tears--K'Rish would want him to go after Captain Golding and strangle him. But Seungo wasn't much of a fighter.

He brushed a finger over the K'Rish's forehead, the details of the ridges on his forehead and down his cheeks. The man never smiled--not in public or in pictures. But each time Seungo took him into his arms, K'Rish smiled for him. Now he was gone. Now he was tasked with packing up K'Rish's things and figuring out what to do with them. He knew he couldn't keep them all. There was no way--but then again he couldn't just give them away.

Dropping the framed picture into the bin, he reached for another.

Leaving the base, Kaile knew she had to head back for the verdict, but she had something else she had to do. Seungho Joon-Li had lost someone--someone he cared about in the whole debacle. She was beamed on board after told not to go near engineering becausae they weres till working. Frowning she made her way to K'Rish's quarters and waited.

Seungo frowned. "Enter."

Kaile stepped into sensor and the door opened. The room was dimply lit and Seungo was sitting on the side of the bed. Rubbing her hand against her thighs, she walked across the room and sat on the side of the bed, silently just being there for Seungo, hoping he knew just how horrible she felt about what happened.

"He loved working with you," Seungo said finally. "He felt like you would have made a great Klingon."

Kaile laughed softly. "He said to me once. After I beat him with a bathleth."

"You? Beat K'Rish? Dare to dream!"

She nodded. "Yes. It's true. I swear he let me win but I am going to my grave saying I won fair and square--I'm sorry how this turned out you know. I never in a million years thought Aaron would harm anyone on this ship. It was almost like he'd lost his mind."

"I hate him. He took away the one little happiness I had in my life," Seungo admitted. "I cannot begin to imagine how it will feel to go to bed without his breath against the back of my neck."

"I'm sorry, Seungo. I should have looked out for K'Rish."

Seungo said nothing. He simply picked up a compass he'd given K'Rish. He stared into it, watching the symbol turned left then right before it stopped, pointing north. "I wish I could take things home to his brothers. But they disowned him when they found out about me. Sometimes I think I broke his soul with what we are."

"What you are?" Kaile questioned. "What you are, Go, is in love. What you were, was in love. What is more pure than that?"

"Honour."

"And look where it left them? They are alone and miserable. K'Rish was happy with you. You made him smile--you made him strive to make you proud. Go, listen to yourself. K'Rish would frown at you and give you one of those serious, looks could kill, looks."

Seungo laughed. "He would, wouldn't he."

Kaile took a breath. "I am here to offer my services in packing his things up. How we can just pack up someone we love in a tiny box and store them away is beyond me."

"I've been wondering the same thing," Seungo admitted. "Especially when they were so much bigger than life."

Kaile rubbed her palms against her thighs and stood. Looking around, she grabbed a box and began removing the pillow cases from the pillows.

"What do you think is going to happen to the captian?" Seungo asked.

She thought about it for a moment. "I'd like to think justice was true and he'll pay for his crimes--but with the same breath something snapped in him...something evil and dark. It's no excuse..." seh trailed off as she moved across the room and caught a picture of K'Rish. She knew for sure Seungo forced him to take it. "Though it's no excuse. What a mess."

[Scorpion #2] Home Sweet Home

Lt. Kani Oloonu
Cheif Medical Officer

USS Scorpion
<Maui, Earth>

Kani stopped and peered over his shoulder.  He laughed and hid behind the body of a tree as his ten year nephew came peeling through the trees toward him. Reaching out, he caught the little boy around the waist and hoised him high in the air and caught him.  Shane laughed and gripped a hold of Kani's shoulders.

"Uncle Kaio are you leaving again?" Shane wanted to know as they made their way back toward the main house. "Ma said you would have to go if they called you."

"Ma is right," Kani replied. "I am an officer now.  I go when they call."

"Its not the same here when you're gone."

Kani smiled. "I am sorry. But, sometimes grown up has to do things they don't particularly want to do sometimes.  I love being an officer but leaving my family, leaving you is always hard. Do you understand?"

Shane went silent for a while before nodding, "I think so. You love your family and Starfleet so leaving one for the other is hard."

Kani smiled. "Exactly."

"Well I feel the same," Shane reported.

Kani lowered him to the ground before hunching down before him. "Ah li'ili ' ekahi," he whispered then hugged Shane. "Come on, we should get back before your mom sends out a search party."

Shane laughed. "Ae. She probably would too."

Back at the main house, Kani walked his nephew into the house.  The moment his sister saw them, he watched Kelani's eyes changed. They grew big like saucers, her jaws dropped and words that he knew should be escaping her lips died at the back of her throat. He beamed at her proudly.

"Where did you find mud?" Kelani wanted to know. "You're covered! And you! Kaio! You're just a big kid!"

"Come little sister," Kani flipped some wet hair from his face. "Give me a hug, ae?"

Kelani squealed and took off running around the sofa. "Kani Oloonu don't you dare!"

But though he let her escape him, Shane wasn't so generous. He wrapped his muddy arms around his mother's legs holding on tight.  She laughed harder, "you too Shane?"

Shane giggled and beamed with pride up at Kani who winked at him.

"Alright dirty bus," Kelani picked up Shane. "Now you shower."

Hours later, as night fell over Maui, and after Shane was tucked safely in bed, Kani sat alone on the porch in the swing. He rocked himself back and forth with one leg as the other was tucked beneath his bumb.  A beer sat on the glass table beside him and he listened to the insects he missed so dearly when he was away. Taking a breath, he took a sip from the bottle and placed it back.

The moon rose over the tree tops as a cool breeze ruffled his hair.  He'd missed that smell, that smell of the ocean being carried on the wind.  He missed the way it caressed his skin, leaving traces of the ocean on his body.

"Can I join you?"

He looked up into Kelani's face. For the first time in a while, he wondered if he'd done right by her. He'd promise their parents he would care for her. Though she is fully grown with a child, he still felt an urge to take care of her.

"Sure."

He shuffled over so she could sit down. When she did, he took a breath and picked up his bottle.

"You have that look again," Kelani whispered, resting her head agains this shoulder.

Kani smiled. "What look?"

"The look that says you're worried about something."

"Not worried, Kel...Just wondering a few things." He replied.  With a breath, he wrapped his arms around her pulling her into his chest. "I haven't told Shane I was leaving but he knows."

"I know."

"I tried explaining to him as best I could and from what I saw he understands.  That's a smart child you have there."

Kelani laughed. "You know one day you should have one of your own."

Kani chuckled. "I don't know if that is necessarily a good idea," he laughed. "We both know I'm a big child and having a child would just--well turn me into an adult."

"Oh dare to dream!" Kelani teased.

[Scorpion #1] The Trial

Commander Kaile Emmerson
Executive Officer
USS Scorpion (before repairs)
<Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco>

Kaile knew this would happen. She from the moment her and Dr. Oloonu decided to relieve the captain of duty things would snow ball from there.

"At first we relieved him of duty and confined him to his quarters," Kaile told the court.  She felt physically ill. "But that didn't work."

"What do you mean it didn't work?"

"He attacked the guards placed outside his door and escaped. Then we started losing power to the thrusters--he hacked into the system and tried diverting power fromt he thrusters for the torpedos."

"So even after he already fired one at the planet...he tried firing another?"

Kaile swallowed the lump in her throat. "Yes sir."

"What happened next?"

"I ordered security team Beta and the marines to go after him," Kaile said. "He has military training and I didn't want any more fatalities on board. I ordered them to confine him to the brig when he was caught."

"Were there any mroe fatalities?"

"Yes sir.  He killed one of Beta's men. According to the autopsy report, by breaking his neck."

Kaile took a breath.

"You blame yourself for this--why?"

Kaile locked eyes with the JAG officer and took a breath. "I know Captain Golding better than most--that is why I was promoted to be his XO. I should have known something was terribly wrong."

"Why do you say that?"

"He's normally so careful, sir," Kaile responded. "Immaculately dressed, outgoing. He had an open door policy.  When I tried entering his ready room just before arriving at the planet, I smashed into it.  It was locked.  His uniform looked as though he'd slept in it, his eyes were red."

"And did you ask him why that was?"

"Of course. He said he just couldn't sleep."

"Did you make a suggestion as to what he should do?"

Kaile nodded. "Yes sir." She glanced at captain Aaron Golding.

"What was that?"

"I suggested he see Dr. Oloonu," Kaile replied. "I mean, if he couldn't sleep there had to be a reason. I also suggested he speak with our counselor."

"Why the counselor?"

Kaile smiled. "Because the last time I couldn't fall asleep, Dr. Redding was wonderful in easing my mind so I could sleep. Sometimes all someone really needs to ease insomnia is to clear their minds, I find."

The questions kept coming. Sometimes faster than she could answer them.  Kaile kept up as best she can, from time to time looking at her former captain.  Aaron had the same posture he had the moment the proceedings began and the witnesses were led in. He was hunched over, slouched.  His hair was frazzled his hands shook where his fingers were laced tightly together on the desk. He looked fragile. He'd lost weight.

She knew that in the back of his head, he already knew the outcome to all of this.  But what she really wanted to do, was why. Why such a strong, put-together man would do that. She wanted to know why he thought it was vital to slaughter over three hundred strangers plus two of his own.

"What do you think of Captain Golding commander?"

"I used to think the sun and moon came from him," Kaile shrugged. "He was always kind to me and treated me with the utmost respect.  The man sitting here now, the man who dropped that torpedo isn't Captain Golding...he couldn't be...can't be..."

With her testimony over, the court was over for the day. She watched as they led captain Golding back to his cell.  The captain stopped and looked at her and her breath was caught in her throat.

"I am sorry, Em," he whispered, his voice cracking from lack of use. "I never meant for any of this to happen. You have to believe that."

"I begged you to see the dr, Aaron. I begged you to see the counselor. I--I don't know what else I could have done for you."

"You saved me, you know," Aaron whispered, as the guards nudged him to move along. "You saved me, Em."

Kaile looked away and pressed her eyes shut.  A shudder washed over her with his words and tears stung at her eyes. She didn't understand it.  How could she have saved him.

"Commander?"

Kaile turned around to see the counselor, Angela Redding standing there. "Yes. Lt."

"This is all going to end badly, isn't it?" Angela questioned.

Kaile looked over her shoulder at the captain disappearing down the hall. "I don't see it ending any other way."
