[Scorpion 9] Banana Pancakes

Lt. Kani Oloonu
Chief Medical Officer

USS Scorpion
<Maui, Earth>

The morning found Kani jogging along the water, through some woods and up a lone slope.  He jogged slower than normal for his mind just wasn't into it. When he finally made it to the top, his lungs and muscles burned from exertion but he was looking forward to that. He loved the feel of a good workout.  At the top of the hill, he stood, hands on hips staring down at the blue of the water below him. To his right was the green of the land and to his left, the buildings of the city.

He never realised it but slowly more and more buildings were developed.  When the government had mandated that no more woods be cut down, he could have cheered. Smiling and inhaling deeply. When he was locked on board a starship with only a holodeck to remember his home by, the air was never this fresh.  He really didn't want to leave the top yet--he just wanted to stand there and stare out over the water.  But he'd like to be back and make Shane some banana pancakes.

Smiling, he took one final look around and turned back down the hell, pumping his arms and pushing himself.  Though he felt lazy and wanted to stop, he tried double hard and by the time he emerged behind his sister's large house, he didn't feel any guilt about holding back. Sweat flowed down his back, over his face from his soaked hair.

"Kaio, is that you?" Kelani called from up the steps.

"Ae," he replied. "I went for a run. Is Shane awake?"

"Not yet. Why?"

"I wanted to make him breakfast," Kani confessed. "I am going in for a quick shower."

"Alright."

Kani didn't waste time. He took a quick shower and got dressed in a white pair of shorts and a black hawaiian shirt with red parrots on it.  He then set right to work making his nephew's favorite breakfast item.  It was a good hour before Shane came down the stairs and Kani was ready.

"Morning sleepy head," Kani teased.

"Morning uncle Kaio...what you doin?"

"I made you breakfast," Kani grinned before scooping shane into his arms. "Want some?"

Shane nodded. When he saw the pancakes his face lit up and he hugged Kani's neck tightly. "My favorite!"

"I know...Do you wany syrup or butter?" Kani laughed.

"Syrup please!"

Kani pleaced Shane into a chair and shared him some breakfast. He added a glass of milk before looking up to see Kelani leaning against the door watching them.  "What?" he asked.

"You really should give serious thought to children, Kaio," she took a breath and walked into the room. "Can I have some breakfast too?" she kissed Shane's head.

"You can have some of mine, mom," Shane told her.

Kani laughed and shared some food for himself and his sister before sitting across from her. Kelani was right. But children took time. How can you have children with someone you barely know? Kelanie did it...Shane's father took off the first chance he had.

He sighed and glanced over at his sister then at Shane. They were his world.  Everything was so overly complicated. Suddenly Kani was wishing, life was as easy as making panana pancakes.
