[Scorpion 8] Chicken or the Egg

Ensign Thorix
Asst. Medical Officer
USS Scorpion
<<Jamaica, Earth>>

and

Tasha Sloane
Morale Officer

USS Scorpion
<<Jamaica, Earth>>

Thorix lay on his back in the sand beside his best friend Tasha and took a breath. "Can you believe any of this?" The young Vulcan doctor wanted to know. "Who knew our captain would have gone crazy, tried to kill a planet?"

Tasha chuckled. "It's not a laughing matter but what else can you do? If you don't laugh you will definitely cry."

"I am not much of a crier," Thorix replied, turning his head to peer at his friend. She was laying beside him, sunglasses over her eye and a long piece of strawberry twizzler sticking from her mouth. He chuckled. "But I do not know what commander Emmerson is going to do."

Tasha took a breath and bit off a piece of her candy. She had thought about it, and what she was going to do to build crew morale after this whole debacle was over. She didn't even know is she was still a part of the Scorpion's crew.

"We don't even know if we're still a part of the crew," Thorix voiced her thoughts. "This whole thing is a mess."

"That is true...but I'm sure we're still. I mean, if we weren't they would have told us already," Tasha shifted on her towel. She rolled over to her stomach, groaned and rolled back to her back.

The two lay there in silence for a bit longer before Thorix sat up. "I should get out of the sun. Vulcans don't tan. We burn."

Tasha laughed. "I could have told you that. Lets get inside."

Tasha and Thorix gathered their things and ran across the sand, up some steps and into Tasah's summer home.  It was a beautiful place on the small island of Jamaica. One of the only paradises left on the planet.  Thorix loved it there for it was quiet--so quiet--at nights when he lay awake in his insomniac stupor he could hear the ocean waves crashing into the rocks outside his window.

Taking a breath, he dumped his towel to the ground, and followed Tasha into the kitchen. He climbed to a stool while Tasha peered into the fridge and began pulling out food from the night before.

"I will say this though," Thorix lifted the cover from a white bowl and smiled. "It is going to be interesting, whatever happens."

"Yeah...Captain Golding just...I don't know Thor. If a man like that can snap...."

"What does it say of the rest of us?" Thorix finished. Reaching into the bowl he grabbed a handful of grapes and stuffed some into his mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, he relished the taste of the cold fruits before swallowing. "Humans are strange creatures, Tasha...They are capable of amazing acts of kindness."

"And mind-numbing acts of evil--and the scary thing is they can turn from good to bad like that!" she snapped her fingers.

"Do you think people are born good and becomes evil or do you think they are born evil?"

"Is this one of those chicken before the egg riddles?" Tasha made a face.

Thorix shook his head. "No riddle. I'm just asking what you think."

Tasha shrugged while swiping some grapes. "I don't know. I do know that most things come down to freedom to chose. You can chose to do good or chose to do evil."

"So you think they are born good but chose to be evil?"

"For crying out loud, Thor!" Tasha growned. "We're on vacation. Turn that brain off for just a second, would you?"

Thorix shoved more grapes into his mouth and chewed staring at her.

Tasha shook her head and tossed a grape at him. She knew telling a Vulcan to turn off his brain is like asking them not to go through pun far....
